Starcke is our broadest abrasives range, covering discs for edging machines and belts for drum sanders, cut to fit specific equipment rather than sold as generic sizes. Silicon carbide discs cover Bona Edge-compatible edgers at 178mm, Festool-pattern discs come in 150mm with the 8+1 hole layout for dust extraction, and Lagler Trio machines take a separate 200mm no-hole disc. Zirconia belts, sized for standard drum sanders, run from grit 24 for aggressive stock removal through to 120 for finishing. Call 020 8830 9785 if you need help matching a disc or belt to your specific machine.
Discs vs belts: what each is for
Discs handle edging and perimeter work, run on random orbital or edging sanders around the room's edges where a drum sander can't reach. Belts do the main body of the floor on a drum sander, and come in longer runs designed for continuous aggressive or finishing passes depending on grit.

Silicon carbide vs zirconia within the Starcke range
Starcke's discs are predominantly silicon carbide, chosen for edging work where cut quality and surface finish matter more than raw durability under heavy pressure. The belts are zirconia, better suited to the sustained pressure a drum sander applies over a long run, holding their cut for longer than a lighter abrasive would under that load. This split isn't unique to Starcke, it reflects how each abrasive type performs best, but it's worth knowing when comparing products within this range.
FAQ
How is Starcke different from the Blanko abrasives you also stock? Both brands supply zirconia and silicon carbide abrasives sized for the same major machines, so in practice the two ranges overlap in what they cover. Starcke is our broadest range by grit and size options; Blanko is a smaller but equally capable alternative if a specific Starcke size or grit is out of stock.
What does "8+1 holes" mean on the Festool-pattern discs? It refers to the dust extraction hole pattern, eight holes plus a centre hole, matched to how Festool sanders draw dust through the disc. A disc without this exact pattern won't extract dust properly on a Festool machine even if the diameter matches.
Do I need different grits for discs versus belts on the same job? Not necessarily different grits, but you'll typically need both a disc and a belt at each stage of the sanding sequence: the belt for the main floor area and a matching-grit disc for the edges, so the whole floor sands evenly.
How many discs or belts do I need for an average room? This varies a lot by floor condition and room size, so it's genuinely easier to call and talk through the job than guess from a general rule. Call 020 8830 9785 and we can help estimate quantities.
